Products may be labelled as “diabetic-friendly”, “low sugar”, or “suitable for blood sugar management”, but these terms alone do not always tell the full story. Mistake 1: Focusing Only on Sugar Content
One common mistake is looking only at the number of grams of sugar on the nutrition label. While reducing added sugar is important, the effect of a nutrition drink on blood glucose depends on more than just sugar content. The balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fat in the formula also plays an important role in how quickly glucose is released and absorbed by the body. A product marketed as “diabetic-friendly” may still contain rapidly absorbed carbohydrates that may not align with the goal of supporting steadier blood sugar levels.
Mistake 3: Choosing Products Without Looking at Clinical Evidence
Not all nutrition products are evaluated in the same way. Some rely on estimated nutritional calculations, while others undergo testing to understand how the formula performs in real people. When choosing a nutrition drink, look for products supported by human clinical GI testing, where the blood sugar response is measured in actual participants rather than predicted based only on laboratory analysis. This provides stronger evidence of how the product may perform in everyday consumption.
Mistake 4: Overlooking Key Nutrients That Support Blood Sugar Metabolism
Another common mistake is focusing only on carbohydrates and sugar content while overlooking other nutrients that play a role in overall metabolic health. Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in normal carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism, and it contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. When choosing a nutrition drink, consumers should consider the complete nutritional profile, including the quality of carbohydrates, protein content, fibre, and important micronutrients such as chromium, rather than evaluating a product based on sugar content alone.
