Understanding Gout - Painful Joints Condition

Gout Cover 1

What is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden and severe pain in the joints. Gout might seem confusing, but it’s essential to learn about its causes and symptoms to manage it effectively.

How Does Gout Happens?

Gout happens when tiny crystals called urate crystals build up in the joints, causing swelling and pain. These crystals form when there’s too much uric acid in the body. Uric acid is produced when purine* is metabolized in body.

*Purine is a chemical compound that can be found in certain foods and drinks, like red meat and sugary beverages.

#2 Reduce Red Meat, Organ Meat and Seafood Intake
Red meat, organ meat and seafood are usually high in purine which may trigger gout attacks easily. Reducing red meat, organ meat and seafood consumption can help manage gout attacks. Instead of red meat, incorporating more plant-based protein sources like beans, lentils, tofu, and nuts can provide protein without contributing to uric acid levels. Additionally, opting for lean cuts of poultry and fish can be a healthier alternative to red meat.

#3 Reduce Consumption of Sugary Beverages
Sugary beverages can contribute to gout because they contain high levels of fructose (a type of sugar), which can increase uric acid production in the body. When you consume sugary drinks, the fructose is metabolized in the liver, leading to an increase in uric acid levels. High uric acid levels can then lead to the formation of urate crystals in the joints, triggering gout attacks.

#4 Drink Plenty of Plain Water
Drinking plenty of water helps flush out uric acid by making your kidneys work better. It increases urine production, allowing your body to remove excess uric acid more efficiently. This reduces the risk of uric acid crystals forming in your joints and causing gout attacks.

#5 Exercise regularly
Regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight, which improve joint function, and reduce inflammation associated with gout. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.
